PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
DAY 1 – TRANSFER AIRPORT – HOTEL HD. - CITY TOUR PUERTO MONTT
PUERTO VARAS HD.
At agreed time, reception in airport, transfer Hotel in Puerto Varas.
In an overall 30 Km. (15 miles), we will show you this picturesque city which was in its early days the rendezvous point for Huilliche Indians coming from the nearby islands. They called the area Melipulli (Four Hills) but was later called Puerto Montt with the arrival of the European settlers in the 1850’s to colonize and prosper in our region.
From the Manuel Montt lookout point, we can see Tenglo, Maillen and Guar Islands that guard the bay, creating a peaceful interior sea; we can also see highlights such as Pelluco neighborhood, the regional government, the German school, etc. The latter is located in a quaint residential area, which we will drive by on our way to the city center. Once there, we will drive along the main street, Antonio Varas, where an array of shops serves not only the residents, but also the rural population from nearby country and islands. Using the main street we reach the Plaza, where an interesting wooden building, started in 1856 is found: first it served as shelter for the newcomers but later it was remodeled to become the Cathedral. On a different corner of the plaza, we will see the Settlers memorial, the city hall, the Diego Rivera art hall that hosts the works of the many artists of the region and beyond. We will visit the plaza on foot allowing our visitors to have free time to enjoy like the locals a cup of coffee, shop at the local stores or at any of the shopping malls.
We drive on using the promenade up to Angelmo, the harbor neighborhood, where we will find the fish market and the handicrafts market. The artisan markets offers a variety of crafts from Chile and neighboring countries such as Ecuador and Peru, so we will see items made of Word, copper, silver, local stones such as lapis lazuli and volcanic glass, and alpaca, sheep other wools, etc. The array of objects is so large that it is worth a stop here to shop for souvenirs.
Nearby, we find the fish market past the cove, so renown due to the works of local painters, where we will see the most characteristic species found in the local waters along with small restaurants that preserve traditional dishes such as the Cancato or Curanto and add living color to this picturesque area. Visitors will have the chance to try some of the products should they want to. We continue our drive along the coastline leading to Chinquihue; area used during the summertime as a beach for locals, but is a traditional area of fishermen so we see dozens of fishing boats and the traditional houses built on stilts on the water. This neighborhood is also renowned for the quality of its restaurants which may be a good choice to enjoy lunch on the seaside.
DAY 2 - EXCURSION ANCUD FD.
Breakfast in Hotel. Departing from the city of Puerto Varas, we drive along the Pan American highway towards the hamlet of Pargua, where we take a ferryboat that will take us across the Chacao strait to the Chiloé island (25-minute crossing)the second largest island of south America. We stop at Chacao, a quaint village where we will stop to enjoy its colorful shingled houses, its nice coastal landscape and its simple church.
At this point, we leave the highway for a while to detour to the coast where amid hilly green landscapes we will reach the area of Caulín, fishing area known for its oyster farming and its array of birds clearly seen during low tide, such as black-necked swans and Chilean flamingos (in season).
We drive back to the highway that will lead us to the city of Ancud, old Spanish fortress now transformed into the second largest city of the island. We drive up to its plaza on the side of which we find the interesting Regional Museum Audelio Borquez which our visitors can visit during the free time they will have at this stop.
Later, we will visit the San Antonio fortress built to fight pirate and corsair ships during the Spanish times. We continue on to the Arena Gruesa beach, where whether permitting a stunning view of the far mainland can be seen. Next, we will drive up the Huai-Huen hill for an incredible 180° view of the area.
Right after this visit, we will start driving back to the mainland and the hotel.
DAY 3 - EXCURSION PETROHUE OSORNO VOLCANO FD.
Breakfast in Hotel. Departing from city of Puerto Varas, passing by its catholic church from the 1910s and then through its main street to reach the plaza.
We continue driving into the East along the Southern border of the Llanquihue Lake towards Ensenada and Petrohue. On the way, we will see beautiful architectonic remnants of the European colonization times such as the Rio Pescado chapel and the Gevauer family water mill, and stunning views, whether permitting of Osorno, Calbuco and Puntiagudo volcanoes (photo stops), until reaching the hamlet of Ensenada from where we detour into the Perez Rosales National Park, where the wash outs caused by the melted snow and the rain will enable us to see the gorgeous waters of the Petrohue river.
A few miles into the Park we will stop to take a pleasant walk in the woods to visit one of the best spots of the region: the Petrohue river falls. We drive on, this time following the river up to its birth: the Todos Los Santos Lake, also known as the Emerald Lake, from where we will have a great view of the volcanoes, the valley and the beautiful green waters of the lake, so the visitors will have some free time to enjoy the fresh air and the spectacular scenery.
We get back to Villa la Ensenada where we will enter again the Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales, in which firstly we will find the beautiful Laguna Verde, where we will walk through one of the paths in the forest to visit the pond.
Arrival to the pond and photo stop.
We continue driving op the Osorno Volcano on a partially paved road to reach the Ski Center. On the way, we will stop by one of the many raters to have a wonderful view of the Valley of the Petrohue river from where a panoramic view of the river, the Calbuco volcano and part of the Cerro Tronador, the highest of the area.
Arrival to the Ski Center at Volcano Osorno (free time)
We start driving down towards Ensenada again. Should there be lunch included, the restaurant will be there. Arrival to restaurant. Arrival to Puerto Varas. (Breakfast, lunch).
DAY 4 - EXCURSION TO FRUTILLAR - AIRPORT HD.
Breakfast in Hotel. Departing from your hotel we will briefly drive north through the Pan American highway to the tiny city of Llanquihue (“sunken or deep place” in local language), once a powerful source of labor due to its sugar beet processing plant, now business are not as large but yet successful: wood paneling industries, sea weed by product industries, dairy industries along with colonization times industries
such as Möedinger Brothers, still one of the finest sausage makers in the country.
Our tour takes us through the city, passing the birth of the Maullin River (the only outlet to the waters of the Llanquihue Lake) until we reach the old road that borders the lake, a gravel road mostly used by dairy trucks that will allow us to witness everyday life in the farms around the lake. On the way we will detour uphill to visit a memorial to the first settlers of the area, where, whether permitting, we will have one of the most stunning panoramic views of the region: the view of seven volcanoes: Puyehue, Casa Blanca, Puntiagudo, Osorno, Tronador, Calbuco and Yates.
Along the way, the presence of salmon farms will give us plenty of opportunity for good pictures and a chat about the main industry of the region. The green fields and the old manors announce us that we are arriving to Frutillar, where we will provide a full ride along its promenade, Philippi Ave. honoring the naturalist we owe our region to, along which a display of European architecture, beautiful gardens, tea parlors where Kuchens and strudels compete for the visitor’s attention , high quality crafts, and many photo opportunities lead us to the open air German Colonization Museum, a site museum reproducing an immigrant farm and architecture, with fragrant vegetation and delicate china and glass pieces, machinery, etc.
Note:
Depending on whether the visitors have booked lunch, they will be either taken to the appointed restaurant or left free in the city center to enjoy themselves with the many beauties Frutillar has to offer.
At the rendezvous point we will depart for the hotel this time using the Pan American highway all the way through. (Breakfast, lunch).
At agreed time, transfer to Airport.
